Football In Australia

Australian football is fast furious and hard hitting. There is no protective gear such as padding to soften impacts. There are sixteen teams that face each other in the competition. They will all battle with the prize being the premiership cup and the spoils that go with that. It is decided on grand final day which is in the last week of September. The day of the match the ground is packed to full capacity. The season is long and the league is promoted well looking for new recruits to add to the rookie lists of teams.

Football in Australia has a few forms; the one favoured in southern states is Australian Football League. The season is twenty-two matches long in a season and that do not include the short preseason competition. The players from each team as well as rookies and second division have their work cut out for them indeed. As a past article discussed there are sixteen teams in competition. From this, eight teams will play off in finals in September, with the grand final being played in the last week of September.

It has been a year of mixed fortunes with teams taking a lead in form and then dived out of form or consequently hit with injury problems to key players at some time in the season. My team is Carlton, who looked very threatening early on in the season. In the first three games, they had demolished the sides pitted against them and were elevated to favouritism for the finals. It was all media hype, which is unhealthy at that time of year. The season is long and most coaches will speculate a week at a time, anything else would be deemed foolish.

Hawthorn football club are the new favourites at this stage, and are making every post a winner. They had recently defeated Carlton as well as Collingwood who were also favoured to be a finals contender. The strange part about the defeats of Collingwood is that Carlton easily beat them early in the season, then when we were not expected to win we did again, even with a team that had injuries and were down on confidence. Somehow, they lifted for the occasion, as they are archrivals. The interstate teams such as West Coast from Western Australia and Adelaide from South Australia has shown strong displays over a whole game. Sydney has surprised with a surged effort to rise to top of the ladder.

The hierarchy of the league are continually promoting the game especially on the international stage. It seems to grow in outback regions where tribal people exist and the game is second nature to them now. It all began with our own people and toured to other places or Islands to communicate and promote at the same time recruiting individuals along the way into a rookie system. There have been avenues to recruit other sports people into football. These include basketball players, Rugby union players, and athletes with Olympic potential. All these types are beneficial to our game. It is a short life span as speed and youth are important. Once a person reaches thirty the body tends to slow down. This enables them to change their game style to a degree or retire to specialist coaching as an example.
