Now with Super Bowl XLIV looming, it will not be long until off season training and preperation for the 2010-11 NFL season. Indianapolis and New Orleans are set to square off at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, Florida. That game will decide the world champion for the year but you can best believe that it will not be long until the wheels start in motion for the next season.
One big question that will be addressed this upcoming offseason will be one that has been asked every offseason for the last three or four years. The exact question is whether Brett Favre will retire for good and hang up his most storied of shoes. Favre has set all of the major NFL QB career records and now that he has just reached 40, it is very realistic that Brett Favre can play in the NFL for at least two or three more years.
Brett Favre will definitely go down as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game of football. The most fascinating thing about Favre is the fact that he has played in nearly 250 straight games. He has played in two Super Bowls, winning one against the New England Patriots and losing the other to the great John Elway and the back to back winners in the Denver Broncos. Brett Favre is one of the best and he has played with the very best.
What are the chances of Brett Favre retiring for good this upcoming season? You have to look at it in two different perspectives. Favre can very easily retire and carry on with the rest of his life. The biggest thing about Brett Favre is that he has set these records at a younger age than folks like Dan Marino and Warren Moon did when they were playing in their early 40's. This is very impressive, especially with Marino who played into his early 40's. If Favre were to retire, he could do it with pride as there have not been many quarterbacks in the history of the league to be able to execute like the great Brett Favre.
Then again with Brett Favre you are getting a once in a generation type of football player. Those competitve juices are still flowing and that was very evident in the way that he led the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship Game this year. Throwing for over 40 TD's in a season at nearly 40 years old is just astounding. In my opinion, I see Brett Favre playing another year or two. I think it is just that drive to win it all that keeps him coming back for more, year after year.
If Brett Favre were to retire for good, it would not surprise me. His stats and records speak for themselves. He was the best quarterback of his generation and will be a sure fire first ballot Hall of Famer. On the other hand though, I wouldn't be surprised if he kept playing . That drive for the top is what keeps Brett Favre going today. He has no more records to chase so that wall and obstruction has been torn down. I see Brett Favre coming back for one or two years and will not be surprised if he gets the Vikings that first Super Bowl Trophy.
